Owner Needs Succession Planning Done The Right Way
The owner of an injection molding company calls me and says he needs to hire a salesperson who’s an expert in their niche.
It’s a small company, and he’s only owned it for a couple of years and he’s still learning the plastics industry himself.
Right now, one executive handles all the sales along with a long list of other responsibilities.
That executive is also nearing retirement, and the owner knows he needs a succession plan.
Every bit of business flows through this one person.
A few days ago, the owner emailed me to ask if his executive had gotten back to me about this search.
Nope.
No response.
And I have a pretty good idea why.
This executive is not about to help hire the person he thinks it might replace him before he’s ready to retire.
My advice: Start the hiring process without the executive.
Involve the executive in the hiring process but realize that the odds are good that that he may not like any candidate and be ready to make the decision on your own.
Make sure you understand everyone’s motives and what they bring to the hiring process.
